  1. Policy Statement

The Office of the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness (MEEC) is committed to protecting the environment, preventing pollution, and continually improving environmental performance across all operations and activities carried out at the above address. This policy applies to all Directorates and Units under the responsibility of the Office of the Permanent Secretary. It excludes the Office of the Minister, the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary, affiliated departments and entities, and off-site personnel managed by the Corporate Services Directorate.

 

  1. Our Commitments

2.1 Environmental Protection, Pollution Prevention & Climate Action

  • Take proactive measures to prevent pollution and protect natural ecosystems.
  • Reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from our activities and promote low-carbon operations.
  • Enhance resilience to climate-related risks and contribute to national climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Integrate environmental and climate considerations into all executive and administrative functions, including coordination, policy monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and public outreach.

 

2.2 Compliance with Legal and Other Requirements

  • Comply with, and where practicable exceed, all applicable environmental legislation, regulations, and other obligations relevant to our operations.
  • Monitor and review compliance periodically to ensure ongoing conformity and continual improvement.
  • Commit to implementing and maintaining an Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001 standards.

 

2.3 Efficient Use of Resources

  • Use energy, water, and materials responsibly and efficiently.
  • Promote digital processes and paper-free workflows.
  • Manage waste according to the waste hierarchy — prioritising reduction, reuse, and recycling.
  • Encourage sustainable procurement and responsible supply-chain practices.

 

2.4 Continual Improvement

  • Establish, monitor, and review measurable environmental objectives and targets.
  • Evaluate performance regularly through our Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Use audit results, data, and feedback to drive continual improvement.

 

2.5 Awareness and Engagement

  • Train and support all staff to act responsibly and understand their environmental roles.
  • Encourage innovation and good practice through internal initiatives.
  • Engage constructively with internal and external stakeholders to raise awareness and foster collaboration for a sustainable future.

 

  1. Implementation and Communication

This policy provides the framework for establishing and evaluating environmental objectives and targets under the MEEC Environmental Management System (EMS). It is communicated to all staff, displayed on official premises, and made available to the public and interested parties. The policy is reviewed at least annually — or sooner if required — to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness.
